HERITAGE CONSULTANCY DSA was appointed as the Consulting Heritage Architect in collaboration with DesignInc Sydney for the new Orange Base Hospital. The construction of the new hospital is on the site of State Significance and includes heritage buildings which were used formally for the mentally ill. The new health campus includes a new General Hospital, two new Mental Health facilities, and the upgrade/reconfiguration of four existing buildings for a mixed use of metal healthy facilities and hospital administration. |
The scope of works were providing assessment for significant heritage buildings which were reused, making archival records of the buildings which were demolished, and providing advice in the overall design of the scale and elevations of the new buildings to ensure they were sympathetic with the large site which has state heritage significance.
Interpretation works were erected around the site in the vicinity of the demolished building s and the significant landscape. An oral history was produced documenting the experiences of current and former staff at the Bloomfield Hospital and Asylum. Prior to the relocation of the former Orange Base Hospital a full archival record was made of the site and buildings in Sale Street.
